Plane Travel with Subchorionic Hematoma: Safety & Concerns
QuestionI'm 41, 9 weeks pregnant (date of last period 2/3/06), and I've been having bleeding/spotting (dark) for the last 3 weeks. The last ultrasound showed a subchorionic hematoma. My MD recommended pelvic rest, but said bed rest wouldn't help. (?) I've been trying to take it easy but still going to work. I have a 2-3 hour plane flight planned in a week. (With a very supportive family on the other end.) Do you think the cabin pressure could cause disruption of the hematoma or a miscarriage? My MD says no, but I'd like an additional opinion.
AnswerA subchorionic hematoma is merely a sequestration of blood within the folds of the developing placenta. It will dissipate on its own within a few weeks. A subchorionic bleed has no effect on the growing fetua and will not cause a miscarriage. We used to always put a patient with bleeding on bed rest until the bleeding stopped. HOwever, research has shown that bedrest has no effect and will not help. You can certainly take a plane ride. The cabin pressures are specifically adjusted to be normal. It will not cause a misscarriage. even if the hematoma disrupts, that is a good thing. The bleeding will get less and less in the next few weeks. Don't worry.
