Pregnancy Concerns: Spotting & Miscarriage - Seeking Second Opinion

Question
I am 33 with 2 kids.  I don't remember when my last period was but I know I had one on Feb 9th.  My youngest child is 12 years old and I am 8 weeks pregnant.  I visited my doctor and told tested positive for pregnancy but had spotting.  They said it was normal as long as it didn't last more than 5 days.  After day 3 I went to the ER and the doctor there told me that I was having a miscarriage and sent me home to have it.  I don't trust military doctors much.  He told me that my blood work was 27 and didn't tell me much after that.  He said it was a lot to remember.  I have to go back in 3 days for more blood work and at that time they could give me some hormones to increase the survival rate.  What is really going on with me?

Answer
If your last period started on February 9, you would have ovulated (and conceived) on February 22 and are now 8 weeks 2 days pregnant. If you have a  threatened abortion (the cervix is closed but you are having heavy bleeding) it can go either way. In 50% of cases, your cervix will start to dilate and your bleeding will get heavier and you will pass the products of concoption. In 50% of cases, the bleeding stops and you will have a normal pregnancy with no problems. The length of time that you bleed has no effect on the outcome. I would take two blood tests (Beta HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a viable pregnancy. If there is a halving of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a miscarriage. If there is no evidence of miscarriage, you can be given progesterone supplentation, which can help prevent miscarriage, if your progesterone level if low. Miscarriages occur in 15-20% of every pregnancy. There is nothing you can do to prevent one and there is nothing you can do to cause one.
