Understanding hCG Levels Post D&C: What to Expect

Question
On October 18, I had a d and c for a missed miscarriage that occured approximately 5 weeks earlier at 7 weeks.  Ten weeks after the procedure, I still hadn't gotten my period, so I called the doctor.  She told me to take a pregnancy test, which came back positive.  I went in the same day to have blood drawn to have my hCG level checked and had it taken again two days later.  My levels were 78 and 76 respectively.  I am going in for an ultrasound next week to see what is going on, but I would really like to know if you think it is possible to still have an hCG level this high 10 weeks after the procedure.  I'd hate to think that I'm having another miscarriage.  I just don't know what to think!  Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Terry :)

Usually after a DNC, that was done to terminate pregnancy, or to aid in removal of miscarriage, your hormones would return to normal within 3-4 weeks after the procedure. Infact, most have a period within 28 days, if they have a normal 28 day cycle.

Sometimes, it can take a little longer for hormones to return back to normal after this procedure. However, at the 10 week mark, I am inclined to say that this is not related to hormones that were related to your previous pregnancy. Is it impossible that this is not related to your last pregnancy? Absolutely not ..but I think its very unlikely.

Unfortuently, your levels are extremely low, and obviously not doubling, so if this is the result of a new pregnancy, it certainly does sound concerning.

The only way to know for sure is to have an ultrasound to visually see whats going on.

I wish you the best of luck, and I will keep my fingers crossed, that you do have some comfort, with your result.

Thanks for writing, and should you have further concern, please dont hesitate to write back.
