Missed Period? Pregnancy Timeline & Testing Explained

Question
Ok i was just wondering how far along do u have to b 4 the pregnancy to stop your period and how far along do u have to be to have a positive result because i missed my period (due apr 23rd) well i am officially 9 days late anyway and the pregnancy tests r all negative ... how does that even work?

Answer
Hi Joanna,

usually once you are pregnant, you miss your period. Plain and simple.  Once you miss a period you would be considered about 5-6 weeks pregnant. The reason for this is:

in a normal, regular cycle, usually 28 days: Day ONE of your cycle is the first day you  get a period. it would be due then about day 28 or so. Once you miss the period and do not get it, this is why you would be considered several weeks along and not just two weeks. This confuses a lot of people because technically, those first two weeks or so of your cycle, you ARENT pregnant, but it is considered part of a pregnancy.

if your tests are all negative chances are you are not pregnant- however if you dont get a period soon I would go to your doctor and have it checked out.

The home tests work by picking up a certain amount of the pregnancy hormone caled HcG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine. Most home tests pick up a positive once that level reaches 100.  In very early pregnancy the HcG level may be very low, it is supposed to double every other day. I do think by now a home test would have picked up enough HcG to read positive on you- but I would test again just to make sure.

Sometimes the body is just not running smoothly. Many things can delay a period: stress, illness, eating problems, hormonal changes. Doesnt necesarily mean pregnancy.

Good luck, I hope things turn out for you the way you want them to- again go check with your doctor if you dont see a period soon. They can check either way and if you arent pregnant they can find out what is the delay.
