Inaccurate Fertility Advice: Addressing Misinformation & Ovulation Windows

Question
I am sorry to offend, but really, this is the most absurd answer I have ever seen. Even women with 28 day cycles do not always ovulate on cycle day 14, and if they DO, they can NOT become pregnant having intercourse on days 15 and 16! The egg has only a 12 to 24 hour window for fertilization! Are you really an MD? ALso inaccurate was your response that you can only have a positive test after 14 days. I had my positive 13 days after ovulation. I know exactly when I ovulated based on ovulatory pain, a rise in basal body temperature, position and location of my cervix, and my cervical mucus. I know women who have had positives as early as 9 days past ovulation, and I also know women who have had intercourse five days before ovulating and became pregnant. Please do not give out misinformation.
Thank you,
Krista

If you have a normal 28 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs on cycle day #14. YOu can ONLY become pregnant if you have unprotected sex on cycle day #13, 14, 15, or 16 each month. If your last period started on May 7, then you probably ovulated on May 20 and could have conceived if you had sex on May 19,20,21, or 21. If you did become pregnant on one of those days, the earliest that a pregnancy test would show a positive result would be 14-21 days later or between June 3-10. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after you miss your next period. YOu did not miss your period. YOu got your period on May 5 (right on time) and it does not matter if it was lightere than normal. As long as you bleed for even one day, it is considered a normal period. You are not pregnant. However, if you were pregnant, by now a pregnancy test would be accurate. "

Answer
Unfortunately, you are totally incorrect. The ovum can remain viable for 24-48 hours after ovulation. The sperm can remain viable for 12-24 hours. Therefore, there is a window of oprtunity for pregnancy from one day prior to ovlation and up to 2 days after ovulation.  Ovulation ALWAYS occurs 14 days PRIOR to the first day of your next period. Therefore,if you have a 28 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next  period), ovulation occurs on cycle daty #14. However, if you have a 30 day cycle, ovulation occurs on cycle day 16. I said in my first sentence that "if  you have a normal 28 day cycle".  Obviously, if you cycle is a different length, you ovulate on a different day. You ALWAYS ovulate fourteen days before the first day of your period. A  pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days after intercourse. The best time to take a pregnancy test (most accurate)   is seven days after missing your period. Sometimes  you may get a positive result earlier, but it is not accurate.  You are offending. I would appreciate if you do not ask me anymore questions.
