Understanding Female Fertility Window: Beyond Ovulation Day 14

Question
http://experts.about.com/q/1007/3514107.htm?zIr=1#r

In the above question you said that if a woman ovulates on day 14 the only days she is fertile are Days 13-16 - you're not serious, are you?  Sperm can live up to 5 days, and the egg only up to 24 hours, so wouldn't the real window more accurately be fertile days from Day 9-10 up to Day 15 or 16?  Giving only the day before Ovulation is definitely not right - LOTS of women get pregnant having sex 2-3 days before ovulation.  In fact, over at fertilityfriend.com a study they did of the charts members provide they found the highst percentage conceieved from sex 2 days before ovulation.

Answer
The latest data show that sperm can remain viable for only 12-24 hours (although sperm have been noted to be present up to 36 hours after sex), and the egg can live for 24-48 hours. That is why we say that the "window" of fertility is one day prior to ovulation and up to two days after ovulation. It has also been found that it is better for sperm to be waiting for the egg rather than vice versa. I have not seen any evidence of sperm living for 5 days. However, a woman ovulates 14 days PRIOR TO  the first day of her period, so if a woman has a 24 day cycle, it is possible to ovulate on cycle day #10 and conceive from cycle day #9-12. For a woman with a normal 28 day cycle, with ovulation on cycle day #14, fertility is still best on cycle day #13-16.
