Lost Mucus Plug at 30 Weeks: What Does It Mean?

Question
After i had sex with my fiance` i went to the bathroom and noticed i had lost my muscus plug--the head of his penis went into my cervix. I was 30wks and after i had some mild contractions but i do not have them anymore-31wks. Is it okay to still have sex? Is it normal to lose it this early? I haven't even told my doctor yet, but have an appointment tommorrow.

Answer
Ashley,
30 weeks is a little early to lose your mucous plug.  If having intercourse caused you to have contractions, I would refrain for now until you are greater than 37 weeks.  Sometimes intercourse and orgasm can cause pre-term labor.  Losing your mucous plug doesn't necessarily mean that you would go into labor soon...it may still be several weeks which in your case is good.  Are you sure it was your mucous plug, or was it just extra discharge.  Mucous plugs are usually bloody, but sometimes, after intercourse, you can have increased discharge that may be a little bloody.  Either way, because you had contractions, I would refrain until you are greater than 37 weeks.  Good luck at your appointment tomorrow!
