Can You Lactate a Year After Childbirth? Understanding Induced Lactation

Question
i had my son in november of 2004 and my husband is having this weird idea about me still being able to lactate and wants to buy a breast pump. I did not breast feed and i am birth control. He thinks it would be cool if my breast could lactate, but i said it would be impossible. I think hes crazy with his wierd fetish idea.

Answer
Hi,

so your question is.... ???  Do you want to know if it is possible to lactate after a year?

There is such a thing called induced lactation, so your husband is correct, it is not impossible. Sorry! :-) Please see the following link:

http://www.surrogacy.com/medres/article/lac.html

You could also check with your local chapter of La Leche League (this is a nationally known group of mothers who provide strong breastfeeding support)

HOWEVER.... I dont know if you would want to do this for any reason other than for a baby...  you are potentially messing with your hormones and being on birth control, you may not want to do this. It is not easy to induce lactation either; it does not work for everyone.

So, I hope this has helped you... yes, you can medically induce lactation, but its  not a great idea at this point, unless you plan on adopting.... you really dont want to mess with your hormones now. So my vote would be NO, you should not try it.

good luck! andi
