Persistent IUD in Abdominal Cavity: Risks and Concerns

Question
I had an IUD inserted on 7-2005 the next month it was gone I have had 2 surgeys to try to remove it which were both unsuccesful so now 1 year later I have the IUD in my abdominal cavity and my big question is can this cause and organ damage or any harm for that matter? any advice
thank you Ashley Haag

Answer
HI Ashley,

it really needs to be removed. It can cause scar tissue to build up (adhesions) and if it was ME I would be on the phone to a new surgeon to get it out. Could it cause organ damage? I guess any foreign body in the abdominal cavity can do that; you've got copper wire and such in there now.

I hope things work out OK, please take care of it as soon as you can. It sounds awful! From what I found out it happens in about 1 in 1,000 that the IUD can embed in the uterus and more rare cases that it actually perforates like yours did.

good luck-andi
