Pregnancy While Using Mirena IUD: A Personal Account

Question
In May of 2005 i had a mirena IUD inserted.Everything was going great until the end of Feb 2006 when i began to experience breast tenderness and vaginal bleeding. i kept bleeding till the middle of march when began having extreme pelvic pain. the pain was so severe i could not stand.I felt as though I was having contractions. Two days later i went to my Dr. and I asked him to remove my IUD. He ran an HCG test and, Guess what I was Pregnant. I was in tears. I'm 35 years old. Well I kept bleeding and he sent me in for an ultrasound and i was about 8-10 weeks by the HCG levels but nothing in the uterus. I was confused.... Now i have ultrasounds twice a week and HCG test done every other day and the levels are decreasing very slowly. Should I have a D&C? And my question is how likely are you to get pregnant on an IUD?

Answer
Hi Gloria,

I can't tell you if you need to have a D&C, your Dr., will need to help you answer that question.

My sister in law had an expierience similar to yours, but she was not on birth control. She becam pregnant, but her HGC was high, so they did an ulrasound and found nothing in the uterus, but rather only a placenta. This is a very rare thing where a sperm meets an empty egg, theres placenta and a sac, but no baby. High HGC levels are an indicator. Maybe you want to ask your Dr. about that.

If they are slowly decreasing, it could be because you miscarried, wich sounds likley.

And yes, it is possible to get pregnant on an IUD, but I was unable to find a statisitc at this time. I know the rate is low, but with ALL birth control forms, nothing is 100%, so theres always a risk.

Good Luck to you, I hope you feel better soon.
