Mirena IUD: Common Side Effects & Weight Changes - What to Expect

Question
I feel silly for asking these questions, after the insertion of the IUD 4 days ago (I should have done more research PRIOR to insertion), but here I am.  I had the Mirena IUD inserted on Monday (It's Friday now).  I have been on a diet and exercise plan the last 2 weeks.  I have lost 4 pounds.

As I mentioned, I had the Mirena inserted on Monday (the 23rd).  By Wednesday, the 25th, I had gained over 2 pounds.  My diet has not changed.  My exercise has not changed.  I've recently (in the last two days) read horror stories about women gaining 10-15 pounds and NOT being able to lose the weight.  I know that a side effect of any hormonal birth control is weight gain, but I was assured by my physician that since the hormone does not enter the blood stream that I would NOT gain weight.  Is my sudden weight gain due to the MIRENA?

Additionally, prior to switching to MIRENA, I was on the pill - so I was already receiving hormones orally.  Why would a change in the method of hormone delivery system cause new side effects (different hormones?)?

Another side effect I ready about was severe cystic acne.  I have now developed a minor case of acne (cystic) on my face.  Is it possible for the hormonal side effects to come on so quickly?

A few pieces of background info (which may or may not be useful): I'm 30.  I have never had a child, nor have I ever been pregnant.  I am over-weight and desperately trying to lose at least 50 pounds.  I'm eating between 1300-1600 calories/day (depending on activity level).  I'm running 2-3 miles at least 3 times a week.  I am on no other medications (other than the IUD).

Thanks!

Answer
Dear Jennifer,

I'm sorry to hear your story and I do wish you had done more research. You can have the Mirena IUD removed if you wish. I would not ever advise this. I think that your doctor might be mistaken about the side effects of the IUD. I would recommend that you do a search on http://www.goodsearch.com about the side effects. Put "MIRENA IUD" in the search box and try that.
I don't recommend the birth control pill either or any kind of hormonal method of birth control. Please email me at CHERYL51@aol.com so we can talk more.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
