Spearmint, Eucalyptus, Melissa & Basil in Early Pregnancy: Is It Safe?

Question
Hi,

I am not sure if I am pregnant.  My husband gave me a backrub with some "relaxation" massage lotion.  It contains spearmint, eucylyptus, melissa and basil. There were a lot of other ingredients too but those seem to be the main red flags.  I hope I didn't endanger the baby, if there is one! I washed off the lotion once I realized what it was.  Can you reassure me?

Answer
Hi K.L...

Well you can breath a sigh of releif ..

Basil, is only toxic, if it is injested ..not if its in a lotion, or balm used in massage.

Melissa, is non toxic ..but is advised not to be used in pregnancy, because it can cause irritation, and sensitization. It is always suggested that Melissa, should be used in low quantity, or dialuted. And given the lotion contained several ingrediants, its was probably a minute amount if Melissa in it.

If you are pregnant, I am sure you are just fine :) Basil is more so the toxic issue, with pregnancy ..aslong as you didnt ingest it ..then you have absolutely nothing to worry about ..

Hope this makes you breat easier ..:)
