MRI Contrast & Early Pregnancy: Risks & What to Do

This question is for a friend. She is in her min 20's has diabetes and has just found out she is 5-6wks pregnant. The problem is she started a new job last week and prior to the job they gave her a mri shot because she works in a hospital. Can this cause problems with the fetus?

Answer
An MRI vaccine should not be taken within 4 weeks of pregnancy. HOwever, studies have shown that no harmful effects to the fetus occur even if the shot was inadvertently given. I would not worry. If your frined has diabetes, she must be meticulous about her control during pregnancy. Follow the instructions of her doctor and make sure that her glucose is under strict control. Good Luck.
