Smoking During Pregnancy: Risks and Safe Quitting Methods
QuestionI am six - seven weeks pregnant with my second child. My son is now four years old. When I was pregnant with my son my family practitioner explained to me that while quitting smoking while pregnant was important, the shock the withdrawl could have on my child when quitting "cold turkey" was worse and that I needed to "ween" myself off of them. Do you know which way is less harmful to my child, and if there are any other resources I might check into. Thank you.
AnswerHello Carly- unfortunately your dr is completely WRONG. Nothing is going to happen to a fetus by having it's mother stop smoking cold turkey. This is such a myth!!! You must stop smoking NOW. I do understand that this is difficult- it is a drug addiction but for the health of your baby, I think you can DO it. I also am an addict- a food addict- and I have found recovery through a 12 step program. I suggest you seek out Nicotine Anonymous and join their program. All the best- Cheri.
