Flagyl & Acidophilus: Preventing Yeast Infections During Antibiotics
QuestionI'm 30 years old, with no children and my last period was about 2 weeks ago. Anyway, this is just a question about antibiotics. I have been given Flagyl for bacterial vaginitis and a friend of mine told me I should take acidophilus anytime I'm taking antibiotics to prevent a yeast infection. How likely is it to get a yeast infection from Flagyl and could acidophilus actually help to prevent that?
AnswerFlagyl (500mg twice a day for a week) in the treatment of bacterial vaginoses will often cause a yeast infection because it is a very potent antibiotic. Taking acidophilus will not prevent it from causing a yeast infection, although it may help treat the infection once it has occurred. A better plan is to wait to see if you do, indeed, get a yeast infection, and then treat it with one pill (Diflucan 150mg) one time and it will disappear.
