Missed Period: Possible Causes & What To Do

Question
I am a lil scared at the moment.  I am 8 days late.  My lmp was on 9/22/06.  I have my period between 30 - 31 days. I took 2 test which both came back negative.  I have no symptoms like sore breast, fatigue or nausea. I made an appointment with my Dr but they won't see me until 2wks form now.  Is there something wrong? Please advise? Thanks

Answer
Hi Kay,

Well automatically when we miss a period we assume pregnancy. Well sometimes we can miss periods for other reasons such as stress, illness, or a hormonal imbalance.

I think it happens to most women at some time in their lives. I know myself, when under severe stress levels, I can have 2 periods a month. Some ladies are very late, and others will not get a period at all.

Illness, like flu's and colds, or physical trama can completely upset a ladies cycle. physical stress also causes the above symptoms as well.

Hormonal imbalances can occur sometimes. Its not uncommon, and usually corrects itself on its own. But it will also delay, menstuation as well.

You stated you did 2 tests, both coming back negative. I think you made the right move, by getting it confirmed with your doctor. He will do a BETA HCG blood test, that will confirm pregnancy, if it exists.

If you find 2 weeks is far to long to wait, perhaps go to a walk in clinic and ask for the blood test. Food for thought, because I am sure you are probably stressing about this right now and that certainly doesnt help matters, in regards to your period.

In my opinion, I think its unlikely that you are pregnant, given that you had 2 negative tests. You tested well after your period was late, which is quite accurate. Sometimes ladies will test earlier when they suspect pregnancy and will get a false negative result because the HCG in their urine is far to low to give them the positive result. If you feel you tested early, maybe try again now. You certainly would get an accurate result. Try doing it in the morning. Urine, in the morning when you wake up is much more concentrate. So if you are indeed carrying the hcg hormone in your urine, it would be prominate, giving you a more reliable result.

Hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing!
