Delayed Period & Breast Tenderness: Possible Causes & What To Do

Question
I'm 36 years old, married. My period is already delayed for about 10-11 days (which is not normal to me). Last night I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I'm confused with my feelings because my breasts are tender as if I'm going to have my period. What could this be? I hope this is not something serious. Pls help...

Answer
Hi May :)

My suggestion is to repeat your pregnancy test. This time, do it in the morning. The morning urine is much more concentrate. So if you are carrying the pregnancy hormone in your urine, it would definately be prominate, giving you a more reliable result. Taking tests in the evening, are not reccomended because during the day, with the intake of fluids, your urine can become diluted. So it could give you a false result.

If you still get a negative result, its probably due to a hormonal imbalance. Have you been under stress lately? Have you been ill with a flu or cold? Both of these could throw off your hormones, and give you a delayed period. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, your hormones can go slightly off balance and delay your period as well.

Now the symptoms you are experiencing can be pregnancy related symptoms, as to why I suggested taking another test. However, anytime there is a hormonal imbalance, it will also mimic pregnancy symptoms, so it can be hard to decipher.

I really wouldnt worry. If you are not pregnant, and this is indeed a hormonal issue, it usually corrects itself on its own.

If you do not get your period at all, say in the next week and a half, I would definately see your doctor and have an evaluation as to why this is happening. Just know, that this is not uncommon at all, and it does generally correct itself.

Hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing!
