Understanding Low Progesterone Levels in Early Pregnancy: A Doctor's Perspective

Question
Hi, I had a miscarriage with my first pregnancy.  I am now 7 weeks pregnant. I have had to vaginal ultrasounds and yesterday I got to see the heartbeat. I am wondering whether I should take a supplement for my progesterone level.  The doctor checked it and it is 16.  I have a feeling that I might have miscarried last time due to low levels.  The doctore says everything looks fine, but my level concerns me.  Thanks,
Misti

Answer
Dear Misti,

Most doctors I know are comfortable with a progesterone level above 14 in the first trimester. And there are pregnancies that have had positive outcomes with lower early pregnancy levels.

Most miscarriages are simply the body's way of dealing with an unhealthy fetus, usually due to chromosomal abnormalities.

Try to have faith in the tests your doctor has ordered and evaluated. Eat healthy, get plenty of rest, take those prenatal vitamins, get moderate exercise (20-30 minutes walking or swimming 3 times/wk).

I hope I've helped. I wish you fantastic luck!
