Delayed Period: Possible Causes & What to Do

Question
I'm 27 years old and have been with my boyfriend for almost three years.  The only method of birth control we use now is the withdrawal or pull out method.  My last period started on Sept 19th and ended on Sept 23rd.  I didn't get my period in October and still haven't gotten it.  I've taken two home pregnancy tests and both showed negative. I've had cramping off and on like my period wants to start. I've been extremely tired and my nipples are almost unbearably sore. I've always had regular cycles like clockwork.  Could I be pregnant even though the tests showed negative? Could it be something else serious? I apologize for being so long winded.  I hope you can answer my question.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Shyvonne :)

I was curious, and calculated your ovulation date, with the information you gave me. You would have ovulated roughly around October the 3rd. So if you are pregnant, you are about 5 weeks or so into it right now. The withdrawl method, is not a great form of birthcontrol. There are over 30 million sperm, found in pre-ejaculate. It only takes 1 to get pregnant. So as you can see, its withdrawl is not a reliable method at all.

If you tested to early, this could give you a false negative test result. This does happen quite often.

So, I suggest that you do another test. This time, do it first thing in the morning when you wake up. Your morning urine, is much more concentrate then during the day. So, if you are carrying the HCG hormone in your urine, it will be more prominate, first thing in the morning, increasing your chances of a reliable result.

Its so important as well, that you allow the full time suggested to complete the test. A false test, can turn positive at the last minute. Many ladies wait 2 minutes, see a negative result, and disgard the test.Little do they know, they did get a positive test result, but never gave full time allowance, for accuracy.

You could also go to the doctor, and ask for a BETA HCG blood test. This is conclusive diagnosing pregnancy, even in early stages. Considering that your symptoms right now are ALL pregnancy related, I am sure they would give you a blood test without hesitation.

Sometimes, when there is a hormonal imbalance in the body, women will also experienc symptoms like you are experiencing right now. Hormonal imbalance can be brought on by stress, illness, worry, weight gain, ect. Hormones, caused by an imbalance will mimic pregnancy symptoms, and it can really leave a girl confused as to whats going on with herself! But generally, it does usually correct itself, and generally is not a serious concern.

However, I think you possibly could be pregnant. I would do another test, but in the morning as I suggested. REGARDLESS of the test result, visiting your doctor should be considered whether your pregnant or not, so you can be evaluated for hormonal imbalance in the event that this is not a pregnancy related issue.

I hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing!
