Delayed Period After Birth Control - Causes & What to Do

Question
I've been off BC pills since november 2006, my periods started off exactly the same time for jan. & Feb. 2007 & i should have started my period March 26, but now i'm 3 days late. I had all the symptoms a week before my period was suppose to start. The breast tenderness, nausea, headaches, fatigue, low back pain, and cramps like i was about to start. when the 26th came there was nothing, i waited and there still is nothing. i took a pregnancy test 2 days before my period was due and it was negative, i dont want to take another test because i dont want to be disappointed. Now i have no symptoms at all, just fatigue, eating alot & gained 5lbs. out of no where. so i dont know what is going on. If it could just be the side effect of getting off the pills. Please help, confused!

Answer
Dear Sonia,

If you had normal periods the two months after discontinuing BCP use, it probably is not related to that. Sometimes it can take a little bit for your body to regulate those hormones itself, but if you had two normal periods, then it would seem to have jumped right in ok.

Taking the pregnancy test two days before your period was due was pretty early to get an accurate result. I usually suggest waiting until after the full week of a missed period before testing for pregnancy to minimize the incidence of false negatives.

My suggestion is to do just that. If your period was due to begin 3/26, I would wait until 4/2 or 4/3 and try testing again. If the test continues to read negative, then you may be experiencing a bit of a hormonal imbalance - for whatever reason. If you were irregular before starting BCPs, you may be returning to that pattern. In that case, wait and see what happens with your next cycle. If it does not come as expected, make sure to test for pregnancy again.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
