Late Period & Possible Pregnancy: What To Do?

Question
Hi, my name is Aspen. I am really worried about if im pregnant or not. My period is never late. I always record my period on a calendar. My boyfriend and I had sex on January 2,2010 . The condom broke. A week later which was the 9th of January we had unprotected sex. My period was due to come on January 12 it never came on. Now it's January 18th still no period. Today i took a answer home pregnancy test. My results came up negative. I'm really not to familiar with this kind of pregnancy test. Could i be pregnant ? How long should i wait to take another test ?

Answer
Dear Aspen,

Anytime there is unprotected sex, there is the possibility of pregnancy. If you have regular 28 day cycles, you would have been expected to ovulate on/about CD 14-15. So, the sexual encounter on 1-2-10 would have been a time of higher risk for you.

I would suggest waiting another five days and testing again. If those results are negative, you can either wait for the next cycle to see if your periods resume or have your doctor's office do a quantitative blood pregnancy test (serum beta hCG). That test will give an actual amount of hCG in your bloodstream rather than just a positive/negative result. Any amount of 25 mIU/ml or more would be considered positive for pregnancy.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
