QuestionHello, I am 35 years old, and currently 16 weeks pregnant (date of conception was march 25th). This will be my second pregnancy, the first ended with a D&C at around 7 weeks (was a blighted ovum). For this pregnancy, I started bleeding around 6 weeks. Bleeding was like a period, with cramping, passing clots. I had an ultrasound which saw a baby and a heartbeat. Spotting continued and a 10 week ultrasound showed a healthy baby, but a 3cmx1cm pocket of blood above the cervix (Subchorionic hemorrage?). Spotting/brown discharge continued, then I had a bad episode of Bleeding/cramping at 12 weeks. I was convinced I was miscarrying, but I had an ultrasound, the ultrasound was normal, the pocket of hemorage was gone, baby's heart rate was great. Bleeding continued for about a week, then tapered down to brown spotting with occasional episodes of fresh bleeding. I was put on bedrest.
At 15 weeks, the bleeding finally stopped for about 5 days, but then 4 days ago, I started to have cramps, and sure enough--the next day started spotting again. My doctor is not worried, she says to continue with bed rest until 20 weeks. Should I be seeing a specialist? Any thoughts? What are my chances for a healthy pregnancy?
I asked her about checking my progesterone levels, but she didn't think that was necessary. (ie. I heard that some women have low levels and need supplementation). I don't drink, smoke, or have any STD's. We have not had intercourse since conception. Today (16 weeks, 3 days), I am cramping and starting to bleed again. How long should this continue?
Thank you
AnswerI need to know the date of the first day of your last period. It does not matter if we know the date of conception. If you haad a subchorrionic hemmorrhage, it has no effect on the pregnaancy and usually dissipates within 20 weeks. It will not hurt the baby. Take another sonogram at 20 weeks. Send me the date of your last period. We date the pregnancy from the first day of your period, not from the date of conception.
