Bleeding 2 Weeks After Period & Birth Control: What Could It Be?

Question
I am on birth control(3yrs) and my last period ended around 2 weeks ago. I started bleeding today, its not heavy at all, and i have slight cramps. I have not missed any pills, but i did have unproteced sex right as my period was ending. Could I be pregnant or am I just being paranoid? Should I go see my DR. just to make sure that I am not pregnant?

Answer
Dear Mary,

It's not likely that you would have conceived as your period was ending. When you are on the BCP, you are considered protected throughout the month. And the time right after your period is not a fertile time for you.

More likely this is just some breakthrough bleeding. Sometimes as we get older our hormonal production and/or needs change. It may be that your body is needing a bit more estrogen in the middle of your cycle to keep you from having the breakthrough bleeding. It is a simple BCP adjustment for your doctor if that is the case.

You haven't actually missed a period, so I really don't see a need to test at this point. My suggestion is to wait and see what occurs with your next period/cycle. If you continue to have breakthrough bleeding, I'd call the doctor and let him/her know what is going on and see if a pill adjustment can be made. As I said, I think it's unlikely you are pregnant, but if you would happen to miss your period, then go ahead and test after a full period is missed.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. Please don't hesitate to write again with additional questions. I hope you have a happy Christmas season.
