Preparing for Pregnancy After 40: Expert Recommendations

Question
I am planning to conceive over 40. what are some recommendations I should do to prepare for the process. I have started taking prenatal vitamins and I plan to exercise 3 x per week.

Answer
Hi Bessie :)

Sounds to me like you are doing all the right things. Pre-natel vitamins are a must, so glad to hear that you are already taking them.

One suggestion I do have, is that perhaps pick up an ovulation kit. The general rule is that on day 14 we ovulate during our cycle. However, women can ovulate anywhere between day 10-20 of their cycle. Ovulation kits will let you know exactly when you are ovulating so you can have intercourse at the appropriate times. Many, have had huge success rates using these kits. They are not very expensive, and they are extremely accurate.

Eat healthy, and drink alot of fluids. Good nurition is essential :)Perhaps given your age, you should also speak to your physican about getting folic acid suppliments. Yes, there is folic acid in the viamins, however women over 35 are at higher risk for downsyndrom, and other conditions such as Spina Bifida that can cause disabilites in children. Folic acid, can greatly reduce the risks of that.

Again, before buying a suppliment for folic acid, its suggested to speak to your physician first.

Hope this answers your questions, and I wish you the best and hope you concieve soon!

Thanks for writing!
