Irregular Periods & Fertility: Understanding Ovulation Timing

Question
My question is I have had irregualr periods since a teenager and I am now 23 years old. I have recently gotten married and me and my husband have been trying to conceive for over a year with no luck. My periods seem to come every three months with a 64 day period between. Last one was September 3oth then Decemeber 3rd. How can I pin point the most likely time for me to ovulate?

Answer
Hi Koolie :)

I can understand your dilema. With cycles such as yours, its very difficult to know when you are ovulating.

Just know, that the months you are not having a period, you are most likely NOT ovulating. Periods start, because an egg has been released and not fertilized. So the uterus sheds its lining, because the egg has passed. Now, the months that you have had a period, then at some point you did indeed ovulate.

Perhaps seeing your doctor to get medication such as provera to induce your period, is something to consider. It could, regulate your cycle, thus making it easier for you to calculate ovulation. Even then, its not full proof that this would work, but it does for many women. Provera, in use with another drug call clomid has aided many ladies in concieving. Clomid, is a drug that will induce ovulation, and increase your chances of conception.

If you choose to try yourself, without the help of a physician, all you can really do at this point is wait until your next period.

As a general rule, ovulation occurs on day 14 after your period. But this is NOT happening with you. If it was, you would be having a period every month. You are ovulating somewhere in between 60 days or so after your period.

So this is going to be extremely difficult for you to determine. The only advice I have for you, is to consider picking up an ovulation kit. They are not terribly expensive, and have a high accuracy rate. First Responce, has an ovulation tracker that is getting rave reviews, and it has aided many ladies in concieving.

I would pick up two kits, and test yourself over the course of days AFTER you have had a period. It will tell you exactly when you are ovulating, and how long for. So, you can intercourse over the appropriate times, and increase your chances of conception.

I also reccomend, that if follow this route, that on the days you are ovulating that you and your husband have intercourse every second day. By having intercourse every second day, this allows your husbands sperm count to double, perhaps even triple. So this also increases your chances. Dont worry about missing a day inbetween. Sperm can live for up to 3-4 days, so there will already be sperm in your body, waiting for that egg.

Also, watch for the physical symptoms of ovulation. You can take your temperature daily, and when you see an influx, this could be an indicator of ovulation. The number one sign, is a mucousy discharge that appears. Its clear, and odourless, and looks just like eggwhite. This the number one indicator, that you are ovulating. Also, mild cramping can occur as well when you have the discharge as well. These are all classic symptoms.

I am sorry, I dont feel as I was much help, but I do hope bare mininum I did give you some insight.

I wish you the best, and should you have any more concerns, or questions in the future, please dont hesitate to write back :)
