Depo Provera and Pregnancy: What You Need to Know
QuestionI went to a clinic and they gave me a depo shot. This took place a month ago and now I am pregnant. I have heard that the doctors are supposed to wait for the patient to have a period before the shot so that no pregnant women receive the shot. Is this true? If it is then what harm may befall my unborn child due to the depo?
AnswerDear Amy,
The first shot of Depo Provera is usually given during or a few days after the start of a menstrual period. After 24 hours, the shot is effective birth control for the next 13 weeks. Getting the shot at this time usually avoids the incidence of an unknown pregnancy at the time the shot is given.
The biggest concern if a woman becomes pregnant while using Depo Provera is that there may be an increased risk of premature birth. You should make sure that the doctor who attends your pregnancy is aware that you received the shot and when it was in relation to when you had your LMP and/or when you conceived.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a Happy Easter.
