QuestionQUESTION: My period returned approximately 6 weeks after I stopped breastfeeding. I have been tracking my ovulation by using ovulation tests, I am at day 28 now I still haven't got a positive test. Is it normal for your periods to be irregular after pregnancy. My daughter is 6 months old now, and we would like to start trying for another one.
Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Sheree,
Periods can be very abnormal sometimes after having a baby. Usually they will return to normal after about 6 months. Unfortunately not much can be done. Good luck!

QUESTION: I have just found out that I have an overactive thyroid. Has this happened because I have had a baby recently, my thyroid was okay before I had my baby. The overactive thyroid is preventing me from ovulating. Is there medication that will regulate this or will it go back to normal with time.
thanks
AnswerHi Sheree,
Because you had no previous thyroid problems, it will have been caused by pregnancy, it is known as Postpartum Thyroiditis. It's well known that the postpartum period can trigger a variety of thyroid and hormonal problems in women who have never had any thyroid problems prior to pregnancy. Most women will return to normal, several months to as much as a year after postpartum thyroid diagnosis, and will never have another problem. Patients who are hyperthyroid can take beta-blockers like Atenolol or Propranolol. Sometimes antithyroid drugs may be given. You may be prescribed thyroid hormone replacement, such as Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid, Armour, or Thyrolar.
