Irregular Menstruation & Lupus: Understanding Changes & What to Do

Question
I have been on my period for a little over a month. Some days it comes really light and the others really heavy.
When it's heavy the blood is light it's not as thick as i should be. When im on my light days, blood just comes in the mornings with some clots. My diet is nomal, i haven't had any stress reacently, i'm not on any birth control, and my sex life is normal. But i am also on daily medication for Lupus. So i would like to know what is wrong and what should i do?

Answer
Dear Priscila,

Lupus sufferers often experience various clotting problems. If you are on a medication that addresses that by affecting platelets, it MAY affect your periods. That really would be a better question for the prescribing physician.

Otherwise, I'd suggest you may simply be experiencing a hormonal imbalance. The levels of estrogen and progesterone which regulate your menstrual cycle normally increase and decrease throughout the month to stimulate certain body processes. At the beginning of the cycle, estrogen increases, causing the uterine lining to thicken. It sounds like this is not happening for you (at least not in enough of an amount to prevent bleeding).

Either way, it would be something I would recommend seeing your doctor about. If this constant bleeding continues, you might be at risk for becoming anemic.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your questions. I wish you the best.
