Early Pregnancy Spotting: Causes & What to Watch For

Question
I am about five weeks pregnant and i have had a history of miscarriages. I just noticed that when i wipe i have seen some dark brown blood. It's not alot but i am a little worried.  I was thinking that it could just be implation bleeding. I am not cramping or anything. Some advice please.

Answer
Dear Lakisha,

A bit of spotting/bleeding in early pregnancy is not necessarily unusual. Vaginal bleeding can occur frequently in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and may not be a sign of problems. Bleeding can be a sign of miscarriage but does not mean that miscarriage is imminent. Studies show that anywhere from 20-30% of women experience some degree of bleeding in early pregnancy. Approximately half of pregnant women who bleed do not have miscarriages.

Unless you begin to experience cramping (like strong menstrual cramps) and/or clots or tissue passing with heavier bleeding, I would not be overly concerned. However, it is definitely worth noting to your OB doctor at your next visit.

Please be aware that you should never wear a tampon or introduce anything else into the vaginal area such as douche or sexual intercourse if you are currently experiencing bleeding. It is also useful to wear a pad or pantiliner so that you can accurately judge the amount of spotting/bleeding.

I do apologize for the delay in answering your question. Although we are encouraged to answer within 3-5 days, I usually like to answer my questions within 48 hours. Unfortunately, I am having issues with migraines again and will likely need to take a short LOA from this while I get some medication adjusted. I do hate to make people wait when I know you are anxious for answers, so taking a short leave seems more reasonable. Again, I am sorry for the delay.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
