Missed Birth Control Pill & Potential Pregnancy: What To Do

Question
After my last period, I did not start my new pack of bcp.  I switched prescriptions (my old ones were giving me migraines) and started the new one a week after my period.  I just realized what I had done a couple of days ago.  My husband and I did not use any back up birth control methods this past month.  Is there a chance that I could be pregnant?  I am supposed to get my period on Tuesday/Wednesday of this week.  I'm not feeling any of the signs of pregnancy that I had when I was pregnant with my two children, but I guess it would be kind of early at this point.  Thanks so much for your help!

Answer
Dear Lena,

Unfortunately, or fortunately - depending upon your perspective, you did leave yourself open to the possibility of pregnancy during that cycle.

If you had started the new pack of BCP on the day you were scheduled to - even though it was a new prescription - you would have been protected. However, you had one full week of no protection at all and then essentially started a new cycle of pills. At the very least, you would have been unprotected for the week you took nothing and the 1st week of the new pack.

You will have to see what happens with this cycle. If you do not get your period as expected, or if the bleeding is shorter than normal in duration and/or lighter than it usually is, then you probably should test for pregnancy the week after the period week, just to be sure that the bleeding isn't implantation bleeding rather than an actual period. Make sure when/if you test that you use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
