Missed Birth Control Pills: What To Do After a Delay?

Question
I have been on loestrin 24Fe for 3 months. I missed a pill last thursday and friday 11/2 and 11/3 as we were away. After reading the intructions and realizing that I was due for my period to start on the following wednesday I thought I would wait and start again on the sunday (which is the first day of the packet)once my period had started. Now I got to the weekend and no period so I waited as then I was confused and not sure what to do. My husband was away so i thought it not a big problem and was just waiting for my period to start and then I would take the pills again. Now one thing led to another and on Tuesday night we had unprotected sex...my husband caught me by surprise and it was too late by the time I told him that it was risky. This happened after 6days of not taking the pill. The next day I got up and was obviously freaking out so I took one pill (I know that won't help) and then that night i noticed a thick sticky discharge which I took to be ovulation signs (?) I have still not had my period. I am now worried that I am pregnant. Is it normal not to get your period after stopping the pill? I expected it to start within a few days which is why I waited...feel very stupid now but I seriously thought it was the right thing to do as i was so close to getting my period anyway. Part of me thinks it is crazy to think i am pregnant but then I don't understand where my period has gone? Hoping that you can clear this up for me. I also read that you should wait a few months before trying to conceive after being on loestrin..why is that?
thanks

Answer
Hi Felicity,
Thanks for your question. First of all, I want you to know that I'm not a medical professional but have many years of research in this subject. The reason to wait to have a baby when going off the pill is because of the hormones in your body and getting your cycle regulated. I can understand your confusion with the pills and your circumstances. I'm not sure what I would have recommended in that situation. It is possible that you are pregnant and you could take a test in a little while and see. Go to http://www.optionline.org and find a free testing center in your area. Have you ever thought about changing birth control methods? The other expert under birth control, Ramona, could tell you more about Natural Family Planning.
