QuestionI am 20 years old and had my first child 9 months ago. My last period was on Dec. 23rd and that is the last time I have had it. I have taken 10+ pregnancy tests and they are all negative. I want to know what might be causing this problem because my periods have ALWAYS been regular. I never had a problem before. Am I pregnant and it is just not showing up or is there a serious cause for concern?
AnswerDear Bobbijo,
Many conditions/circumstances can cause an absence of periods (amenorrhea). Pregnancy is always the first thing that pops into our heads. But in the absence of pregnancy, the following causes are a possibility:
-Breastfeeding
-Stress
-Depression
-Hormonal Imbalance
-Excessive weight loss or gain
-Excessive or strenuous exercise
-Low body weight OR obesity
-Change in diet
-Certain medications or drug use
-Thyroid dysfunction
The general recommendation is that any time you miss three consecutive periods, you should see your doctor to be evaluated so that a cause can be determined. I would suggest that you go ahead and see your doctor to find out what the reason for your absence of periods is.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
