Delayed Period After Endometriosis Diagnosis: Causes & What to Do

Question
I'm 19 and I haven't had a normal period in almost 5 and a half months, and I've feared several times that I was pregnant but I had taken several HPTs and even went to my OB/GYN to have test taken but nothing. I've also experienced some spotting but it wasn't very much or for very long. I don't know if me being diagnosed with endometriosis has anything to do with my absent period. But what could be going on?

Answer
Dear Michelle,

There are many various causes for amenorrhea (absence of periods) - pregnancy being just one. Others can be:
-Hormonal abnormalities, which cause fluctuating levels of the hormones needed to support menstruation
-Emotional or physical stress / Depression
-Rapid weight loss or gain
-Change in diet
-Low body weight
-Obesity
-Frequent or strenuous exercise
-Cysts or tumors in the ovaries
-Thyroid or Pituitary dysfunction
-Certain medications or drug use
-Menopause OR Premature ovarian failure (menopause before age 40)
-Occasionally stopping birth control pills

The general recommendation is that if you miss three consecutive periods and pregnancy is not the reason, you should see your doctor so that a cause can be determined. After a thorough evaluation, he/she may decide to try to "kick-start" your cycle with medication.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
