Delayed Period & Breast Changes: Possible Causes & What to Do

Question
my period has always been on time so I'm a little scare I took 4 test one on the 4 day one on the 7 day one on the 10 and one on the 15 day it was'bfn' so I know i not pregnant but my breast is looking fuller but it's not heavy or hurting

Answer
Dear Joanne,

If you have taken HPTs at 4, 7, 10, and 15 days after you period was due to start and all are negative, you are likely not pregnant - especially if you were using concentrated 1st morning urine.

The breast fullness may just be related to a hormonal surge within your cycle.

My suggestion is to wait and see what happens with your next cycle. You may have experienced a bit of a hormonal imbalance during the last cycle for one reason or another which caused you to skip your period. If your period comes as expected, great! If you miss the next period as well, then you'll need to test again. If it is positive, then your hCG was simply not high enough in this first few weeks to be detected by the HPT. If it is negative, then there is another condition or circumstance which is causing the interruption in your cycles.

Stress, depression, change in diet, weight loss or gain, low body weight, obesity, certain medications or drug use, excessive or strenuous exercise, or thyroid dysfunction can all cause menstrual changes. The general recommendation is that if you miss three consecutive periods, and pregnancy is not the cause, you should see your doctor so a cause can be determined.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
