hCG and IVF: Understanding Positive Pregnancy Tests

Question
I took hcg on 2/26,with egg retrieval on 2/28, and transfer on 3/3. Last night i took a first response test and it was positive, i also took one today and it too was positive. could I be getting a false positive? could hcg still be in my system from 2/26?

Answer
Dear Jennifer,

There is a slight possibility. Some women who receive hCG injections for infertility treatment can get false positives. However, the hormone should clear your system in approximately 5-14 days, depending on the dose and the individual woman. Therefore, any test you performed after 3/12 SHOULD give accurate results.

You will need to have your doctor's office run quantitative blood pregnancy (serum beta hCG) tests. Typically they will run two, 48 hours apart, to see if the amount of hCG is doubling as we would expect it to in early pregnancy.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and will hope that "congratulations" are in order for you!
