QuestionHi Gayle, I have just been through my 1st cycle of IVF treatment. I had the embryo transfer (blastocyst) on 01/08/07. 2 weeks ago (13/08/07), I had a positive result to pregnancy. My HCG level was 144. Last Monday (20/08/07), my HCG level was 1840. This afternoon (27/08/07), I was advised that my HCG level was not optimum. It only raised to 3800. Today is my 6th week of pregnancy. I am extremely worried about the results of this blood test. I was told that all the other hormones level were very good except for the HCG. It was supposed to have quadrupled since my last test to more than 6000. I was told to wait till next Tuesday for another blood test and ultrasound scan for confirmation. In the meantime, I am extremely worried. Please advise. Thank you.
AnswerKnow that with majority of good pregnancies, the hCG levels double approximately every 72 hours, reaching a peak around 10 weeks gestation, then they start to decline.
There is a wide range of normal in the levels, so the thing to be aware of is a proportionate CHANGE in the level. Your ultrasound scan will be the confirmatory sign.
