Pregnancy Symptoms: Conflicting Test Results & What to Do

Question
I'm having all the signs and everything, I took a test and it was positive, then I went to the clinic, and it was a very iffy negative. Is there any chance I am? I really don't know what's going on. I'm sick every morning. It hurts my breats so bad to wear a bra, and I'm eating like no other. I spotted for a few hours and that was it. Do I need a blood test to be sure, or could it be too soon to tell for sure?

Answer
Dear Jamie,

Iffy negative? Hmmm... I'd be confused too!

If you are still having the intense symptoms and you had a positive test when you took it (hopefully with more concentrated 1st morning urine), I would definitely recommend that you go in for a quantitative blood pregnancy (serum beta hCG) test. This would give an actual amount of hCG in your bloodstream, rather than a positive/negative result. Any amount of 25mIU/ml or more would be considered positive for pregnancy.

As far as timing - you didn't give me a LMP date, so I can't really address that. But, in general, if you have missed a period it should not be too early.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
