QuestionI am 40 years old and my last menstrual cycle began on June 30, but the bleeding lasted until almost July 15. I had intercourse on July 18 and then again on July 30 and as of today, my period has not yet started. Normally my cycle is very short, usually 21-26 days, and I realize that at my age, my periods can begin to slow down, or that I can miss a cycle (I have so far until now never missed any periods or even been a day late without being pregnant). I took a pregnancy test this afternoon, which was negative. A short time later, I thought I detected the faintist streak of blood on the tissue after going to the bathroom, but yet no period. I don't know if the test I took today was an accurate result, when I could test again, or how much longer I can wait to find out. I've been feeling very tired and nauseous the past couple days, and my breasts are starting to feel sensitive and tender.
AnswerHI Joyce,
Well it certainly does sound like you might be pregnant...
I would retest again tomorrow; if it is still negative, give a few more days, (the longest days, right?!) and try another home test. Make sure you test first thing in the morning; your urine would be more concentrated and therefore have a higher chance of having more HcG (pregnancy hormone- Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in it. The negative could have been because you did the test in the afternoon and your urine is more diluted then.
And 40 is still pretty young to resign yourself to the thought you might be having such irregular periods... you could very well go years and years with more regular periods! Not sure if this is what you WANT, :-) but 40 is very young!
Good luck... I hope things work out either way! :-)
