Pregnancy Test Uncertainty: Understanding Delayed Periods & Possible Pregnancy

Question
QUESTION: I'm not sure if I'm pregnant, my last period started on the 4th of July & ended on the 7th I'm usually right on point I get it every 28++. I took a test on the 1st of august & it was negative I'm not sure what to think can you help me

ANSWER: Dear China,

If you have had unprotected sex during the last cycle or two, you cannot dismiss the possibility of pregnancy. However, you were really just at 28 days on 8/1. If you still have not had a period, I would suggest testing again after tomorrow (8/8). Although some tests claim accuracy on the first day of a missed period, I usually suggest that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing for pregnancy. This tends to minimize the incidence of false negative results and also avoids wasting money on a test for a simple delay of a period by a few days. When/if you test make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I am sorry for the delay - the system should have had me on vacation, so I was not checking in. I wish you well.

QUESTION: Dear Brenda

First of thanks for the answer... Well I went to the doctor's & had a blood test it came out positive but the doctor said I need to take another one because my hcg is to low it come out to 60. I'm a little scare I don't know if this is normal also I would to know if you can tell me when did I conceived if possible I would like to know how many weeks I'm.

Answer
Dear China,

If your last regular period started on 7/4 and you have regular 28 day cycles, I calculate that you most likely conceived the pregnancy on about 7/18 and you would be right at 5 weeks along today. Your estimated due date will be approximately 4/10/09.

The normal range for hCG is very broad, but at 4 weeks it would be between 5-426 mIU/ml. At 5 weeks it would be between 18-7,340 mIU/ml. The more significant information will be whether that hCG level doubles appropriately 48-72 hours after the first test - which I assume is when your doctor will do a follow-up test. When you test again (if 48-72 hours after the first test), you will want the level to be at least 120 mIU/ml.

Hope that helps! Be well.
