QuestionMy baby was born 2 1/2 months ago and I got my first period about 16 days ago and it's still going. Not heavy, but I've been bleeding for 16 days. Is this normal after giving birth recently?
AnswerDear Joanne,
The first period after a delivery is somewhat of a "crapshoot". Women who do not breastfeed can often have the first period 4-6 weeks after delivery. Those who breastfeed can sometimes not have that first period for up to six months or up until they quit breastfeeding. The first period can be heavier, lighter, shorter or longer than normal - most often it is heavier and longer than usual. Your hormones are attempting to get back to normal levels and you may have issues with this irregular bleeding for the first few months. Just remember - as long as you have started a cycle, you may have begun ovulating and can conceive again. To avoid another pregnancy right away, you'll need to use contraception.
After you get past this initial strange period, more than likely your pre-pregnancy pattern should resume. If you don't already, keep track of bleeding days so that, if you need to consult a doctor at a later time, you have a thorough history.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
