Post-Surgical Abortion: Understanding Heavy Bleeding After 9 Weeks

Question
Dr. Shan,

I had a surgical abortion (9 weeks LMP) on 22 Jan. I had extremely minimal bleeding for only 2 days after the procedure. My first period after the abortion began yesterday, 25 Feb. It started out light, but during the night and morning, it has been significantly heavier than my periods before the procedure and is bright red. I soaked through a tampon in one hour this morning, although it seems to have decreased a bit since then.

My questions are: Is it normal for the first period after surgical abortion to be heavier than normal? At what point should I seek medical attention?

I had to travel a long distance to get the abortion, and it's not really feasible for me to go back there.

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Answer
Hi Jen,
This is not abnormal. After an abortion you cannot be sure about the two or three periods to follow. Sometimes heavy, sometimes light. (and irregular as well)
If you use two or more sanitary towels in two following hours you need to seek medical attention.
Not if the first hour you need two and afterwards less.
Better user pads, no tampons. This because of the infection risk.
I expect and hope that you will recover soon.
