Post-Abortion Recovery: What to Expect After a Surgical Abortion

Question
Hello,

I had a surgical abortion on June 2nd at 5 weeks along.  I didn't bleed very much, and I followed all precautions - no tub baths, antibiotics, no intercourse, no lifting, etc.

My follow-up appointment was on June 23, and they said everything looked good.  They did say that the sonogram showed some leftover blood in my uterus, but that it would pass with my period.

Yesterday, my period arrived right on schedule.  However, it is extremely heavy and painful.  On day one, I had lots of tissue and old blood, but today it is bright red.  I am soaking one "overnight" infinity pad per hour, and am taking over-the-counter pain meds for lower back and abdominal cramping.

Is the heaviness, bright color and pain something to worry about?  If it is normal, does it last long?  The pain has been unbearable at times - causing me to double over and cry.

Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.

Answer
That sounds normal.  You are passing the left over blood.  You can take Ibuprofen 800 mg for cramping. It can be quite painful.  The Ibuprofen (4 advil) does help.  It can last a week.  Call the facility if you soak more than 1 pad in an hour or pass clots larger than a quarter.
