C-Section Hematoma: Causes, Healing & What to Expect

Question
Hi Brenda, I had a baby boy in July 2006 via c-section and had a very nasty large hematoma on my belly post surgery. Although it has faded considerably over this year, the area is still discolored and unattractive. I am wondering if this might be a permanent "scar" or will it eventually go away? I am pretty self conscious about it. I remember my OB GYN telling me that it would take several months to fade away but now we are up to a year! I've tried to google on the subject and haven't found much. However, there was some mention of "draining" hematomas..would this apply here or is it too late?

Thanks so much for your answer.

Answer
Dear Tracy,

I would suspect that aspirating any fluid from the hematoma would be a remedy for within the first 30 days, but not at this late date.

Since it has faded "considerably" over the past year, more than likely it will continue to gradually lighten. However, I don't know that I or anyone can guarantee that it will ever completely disappear.

You should be close to your annual visit time. My suggestion would be to question your doctor about this further. See what his/her thoughts are about its rate of lightening and possibilities for progress in the future. If he/she does not anticipate much more improvement, you might consider seeing a plastic surgeon regarding cosmetic improvements available to you if this is something that bothers you quite a bit.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
