Persistent Spotting While on Birth Control: Causes & When to Worry

Question
Thanks very much for your help (and so fast, too)!  One more question, if that's ok -- I am still having the spotting, some every day -- for over a week now.  That is ok, right?

Question -
Hi -- I am 32, with no children, am on birth control (for many years; don't miss any pills), and am not currently sexually active.  My period is due this Thursday March 9 (since I'm on the pill I get it regularly every 28 days).  On Feb. 26 I started spotting (I have never had this before -- only when I get a pap smear) and it is still happening.  Not to be gross or anything, but some days the spotting is brown and other days it is more pink.

I had an ultrasound a year ago and they found some cysts on my ovary (the kind that goes away (?) -- doctor didn't seem worried and didn't ask me to come back in).  Could this be related to that?  Sorry for all of the rambling details -- I wanted to make sure not to miss anything.

My question is -- I feel fine, but do I need to be worried about this?  Could it just be stress or something?

Thanks very much for your help.

Answer -
The brownish staining that occured on February 26 was probably "mid cycle" staining, which we often see at the time of ovulation. If your period was due March 9, then your last period probably started on February 10 and you were mid cycle around February 23. Usually, if you are on birth control pills, you will not ovulte, but it is not uncommon to have some brownish-reddish staining at mid cycle. it is insignificant and you need not worry.

Answer
If you have spotting every day, that is not normal and indcates a hormonal imbalance. I would suggest that you discuss this with your gynecologist. YOu may have to adjust your birth control pills to increase the amount of estrogen (which will decrease the amount of bleeding).
