Conflicting Pregnancy Test Results: What Does It Mean?

Question
I am 4 days late for my period. I took 2 HPT's yesterday and both came back positive, but when I took another one this morning it came back negative. I then went and had a blood preg test done and it was also negative. I spoke to a nurse and she said that It is probably to soon to tell because I am probably only 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. She also said that my hormone levels are not stable yet and are kinda bouncing around which might be why I got a positive yesterday and a negative today. I feel like I am. My LMP was on 6/25/07 and I get it every 3 weeks. I was just wondering if you have heard of anything like this happening? Thank you for reviewing my question.

Answer
Dear Tanya,

Dating using your 6/25 LMP and 21 day menstrual cycles would put you at about 4 weeks, 4 days today with an estimated due date of 3/25/08. If you have regular periods every 21 days and your LMP was 6/25, we would have expected you to have ovulated approximately 7/2. So we would estimate your conception date to have been 7/2-7/3.

This early on it is sometimes difficult to get consistent test results unless you are taking a quantitative blood pregnancy test (serum beta hCG). I usually recommend that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing for pregnancy. This tends to minimize the incidence of false negative results.

I would suggest that you wait 5-7 days and re-test. Make sure that you use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
