Delayed Period & Negative Pregnancy Tests: When to Test for Accuracy

Question
My LMP was 11/23/2005. I am 20 years old, and have no children yet. My problem is that I have yet to receive my period. My exact and ONLY days of intercourse were 12/20-12/23. My cycle is not an average of 28 days, its more along the lines of 38-40 days. I tested twice already and both times were negative. I was told that I tested too early (12-30&1-7). I was wondering when was the next time I could test to get accurate results?

Sincerely,

Britta

Answer
If your last period started on November 23 and if you normally have a 38-40 day cycle, you probably do not ovulate until cycle day #24. A pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days after conception. Cycle day #24 was December 16. Therefore, a pregnancy test should show an accurate result after January 6. If the test is negative after January 6 you are not pregnant and the missed period is due to hormponal imbalance. I would then call your gyn and have your period induced with Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days and you should get your period within 10 days.
