QuestionI am 21 years old and pregnant for my first ever time. Currently I am 17 weeks pregnant. I have an anterior placental position. I have been having consistent on and off bleeding since 11 weeks and I was told this was a result of a subchorionic hemorrhage. The hemorrhage has consistently been getting bigger also, by a few millimeters at a time. Currently I am only experiencing old blood which i have been told is great. My problem is that i went for an ultrasound a couple of days ago and they have found that i have complete placenta praevia covering the entire os. And that my subchorionic tear is underlying my placenta and is over my cervix. Am I at higher risks of problems occuring throuout my pregnancy? If yes what are the risks and WIll the bleed/tear effect my placenta or my unborn baby?
AnswerDear Lyssandra,
What you've described is a complete previa (the cervical opening is completely covered), as opposed to a partial or marginal previa. Unfortunately, this does add some hurdles to your pregnancy.
Once diagnosed, placenta previa will usually require bed rest for the mother to minimize any additional bleeding or separation from the uterine wall and frequent doctor/hospital visits may be necessary. Depending on the gestational age, steroid shots may be given to help mature the baby's lungs because of the increased risk of premature labor/delivery. Because the cervix is completely covered, a C-section will need to be performed to deliver your baby.
Of course, each case is different and you will need to consult with your personal doctor but this is the typical course of action in these situations. On the brighter side, many babies have been born just fine with proper care. The fact that this has been diagnosed now gives you and your baby an advantage in that your health care providers can be ready and prepared.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and will have a good thought for you.
