QuestionI have been surfing the web and find conflicting information on prometrium and the side affect to the fetus. I'm 5wks and have been on the prometrium since the day I tested positive. So websites say it is very safe and so does my doctor. Other websites say it can cause genital birth defects, is the true? I'm 33 abd have had 2 full term pregnancys with no problems and 2 missed miscarriages.
AnswerHi Sherry :)
Yes, you are fine. You are under a doctor care, so ofcourse they will monitor your pregnancy while you take prometrium :)
Prometrium, is Progesterone, so helps keep you pregnant :) Its usually taken when Progesterone levels are low, or when a lady has a history of miscarriage.
Where the birth defects come in, is usually during ovulation. Prometrium can impair ovulation. Thats usually where the birth defect issue comes in.
However, you are on it to keep you pregnant, and never took it prior, to conception. So you should be just fine :)
Some doctors prescribe the drug just before ovulation when couples are trying to conceive. This is done, that in the event conception has occured, the progesterone levels will be high enough that the body will hold the pregnancy. However, as I said, the risk is taking it before ovulation ..and you definately do not have that issue :)
Hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing :)
