Understanding Conception: Unusual Period & Timing

Question
Dear Brenda,
I recently found out I was pregnant, and I have a few questions regarding the way I conceived.
My day of conception was November 28evening/29morning, however I got my period on the 30th, right on schedule. It was different, because at the beginning of my period I just started bleeding bright red blood, instead of the usual brownish warning discharge I am used to getting. The period went on like this for 3 days, then stopped, for about a day, and then went on but very very small amounts of bleeding for a few days. I took a few pregnancy tests  in the following weeks, however they all showed negative,  and even though i felt pregnant by the 14/16 just judging by my appetite, I still went on to think that I was indeed not pregnant. the last test I took was on the 18th , also negative. This week I started having acute pain in my breasts and started feeling a little sick, so I took one last test, which showed positive ( on the 24th!)Everything I read on the Internet explains that conception takes place 11 to 21 days after your last period, due to ovulation only lasting through that period. So how is this possible?Could I be wrong about conception date? or could it be correct?
please help!
thank you, and merry Christmas!

Answer
Dear Ann,

Sorry about the delay in answering - I am actually supposed to be on vacation from 12/21 through 1/6, but the system apparently did not set correctly. I happened to check in to make sure and saw there were 3-4 days worth of questions, so I will attempt some very brief answers while I have a house full of company pulling me in a thousand different directions!! :-)

Although not completely impossible, it would be extremely rare for you to have conceived on the day before your period was due. The most accurate tool for determining when you actually conceived will be an initial ultrasound. However, it sounds like one of two probable possibilities exists (based on regular 28 day cycles):
A) You conceived approximately 11/16 and just had a bit of an unusual period and a delay in your positive test result.
B) You actually conceived approximately 12/14.

Again, your initial ultrasound will be very valuable in determining the dating quite accurately. For example, if you have that ultrasound around 1/11 and it says you are 10 weeks, you will know that you probably conceived around 11/16. If it says you are approximately 6 weeks, you will know you conceived around 12/14. IF it would happen to say 8 weeks, then you are probably right with your conception date and you may have had a VERY rare cycle in which you ovulated twice in that cycle.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a Happy New Year.

Brenda
