Retroverted Uterus & Early Pregnancy: What to Expect (8 Weeks)
QuestionAccording to my calculations of my LMP, I should be about 8 weeks 2-3 days pregnant. I know that my husband and I definitely conceived on the weekend of 12/1 as I had used a fertility test to confirm ovulation. Today, I had my first sonogram and also had to have the scan done vaginally as per the doctor I have a retroverted uterus. Which has never been mentioned to me during any of my prior exams throughout the past. After some difficulty of scanning the gestational sac, eventually she was able to find the fetus, but according to her calculations the fetus is only 6 weeks and 4 days, but it was very hard for her to find, she also really couldn't detect a heart beat. I am scheduled for an ultrasound next week, but I am not sure how I am to react to any of this. Should I be worried in any way? When my husband and I questioned the doctor, she said that more than likely the fetus will be miscarried and if not the it will need to be done by D&C. This is freaking me out, I have read numerous things and would really hope that the fetus can't be detected because of the position of the fetus. What are the chances of continuing to a full-term pregnancy?
AnswerDear Jennifer
Although ultrasound is the best method to diagnose pregnancy in first trimester, sometimes results can be misleading especially with an inexerienced sonographer. I do not know about the experience of your Obstetrician but it is always a wise practice to repeat the scan in 1 -2 weeks. It goes without saying that there is a chance your baby is still living; otherwise, you would already have the D & C done by now.
In case your pregnancy continues, be aware that retroverted uterus may cause some complications to pregnancy and you may have to visit your doctor more often than usual. Also you have to report any abnormal symptom to her so that she can handle any problem in time.
Good Luck
